Social Studies

What is taught? How - whole or small group? What tools? Who teaches?

Kindergarten
 Based on New York State Standards, Social Studies is taught throughout the year and the content is integrated into the non-fiction portion of readers and writers workshop as per the new Common Core State Standards
Grade 1
Once a week
Grade 2
Sept and Oct-2nd grade expectations; geography. Oct thru Dec – Urban, suburban and rural communities. Dec thru March – Right, Rules and Responsibilities. March thru May – NY over time. May and June – Review of all units taught. Twice Weekly
Grade 3
Integrated in literacy block each child will write 3 country reports for 3 different foreign countries in various regions as per the New York State Social Studies standards and rubrics. Two reports will be done with the classroom teacher. One report and a geography study will be covered by Specialty teachers.
Grade 4
· 2 times weekly
Grade 5
· Content-based lessons taught 2 times weekly
· Social studies content is integrated into the non-fiction portion of readers & writers workshop
· Research skills are taught using social studies content
